WHO:
- A person named Xiao Min is the person in control of the contact information for this website. There is information about how and why this organization got started and a list of people affiliated with the company.
WHAT:
- The idea associated with this website is ridiculous. First off, who would want to send their dog that they love as a family member to this island never to be seen again. The author tries to use emotions in his persuasion by stating that our dogs are not happy curled up by a fire or being with us for that matter. There are no links to opinions on the site or any testimonials. Even though the site is well organized and also pretty through the idea is unbelievable. The website definitely addressed and got its point across. The only thing copyright on this website is the disclaimer.... after reading it I was relived to find out that it was only a joke.
WHEN:
The website was was created in 2003 and all the links work properly.
WHERE:
The website is a .com website so it is for commercial purposes which means that its probably not reliable in the information category.

Medic Literacy/Traditional Literacy
Quote:
"U.S. students may learn something about evaluating sources in research paper assignments and learn to recognize propaganda in social studies, but that's often the extent of their media literacy instruction."
Reaction:
This quote is completely true. When I was in school no teacher taught is anything other than how to use the computer for research papers or for anything other than power point. Even today in many schools around the state students are still not using the internet and the free software that accompany it to its full potential. Some parents/older teachers believe that spending time on the internet is a waste of time and that it "dumbs down" our students. What they don't understand is that literary skills that are being used when reading a book are the same ones that are being used when a student reads a journal article or a newspaper article of even a book off the internet. It actually takes more critical thinking skills to read things off the internet. Students have to think about what is being presented to them on the screen. Is it from a credible source? Is it believable? When was it published? Etc.

Internet safect/usage.
Quote:
"We know that 75 percent of American Adolescents are online (US Census, 2002) and 85 percent of all Internet users expect to find key news information online (Horrigan and Rainie 2002). Yet the adolescent of the 90s are more isolated and more unsupervised than any other generations". The tools of visual, media and information literacy must be taught in schools because they will (or won't) be used at home.
Reaction:
I selected this quote for a few different reasons. 1. The percentage of kids on the Internet is mind blowing. When I was growing up, my mother didn't know enough about the Internet to feel the need to monitor me while I was using it. Not saying that I did or found or searched for anything too terrible but the need to be monitored did exist. Parents knowing these facts about the Internet now leads to healthier internet usage for our younger society. 2. I chose this because I know that parents of the present day use the internet in their every day lives for work or just whatever they want. I also know for a fact that our students are not being taught how to use the internet for other reasons than for research. So learning all the possibilities in school is crucial.
Some tips for keeping students/children safe on the net.
- This article gives parents some good tips on how to keep their children safe.
