"Yes, young people sometimes accidentally slip a btw (by the way) into a school essay. But a recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project confirms that middle school and high school students understand what kind of language is appropriate in what context (Lenhart, Smith, & Macgill, 2008)."
Reaction:
As a student who texts most of her day away and is writing papers/taking notes for the rest, I agree with this statement. Using text words and abrevs (see what I did there) saves time when I am outlining chapters or starting an outline to an assignment that requires me to write a paper. If I wrote down words with exact same spelling or didn't abbreviate certain words in my outline, I would be spending more time outlining than I would spend actually just writing the paper. I do not see a problem with this new digital language, everyone in some way shape or form is using it.

I agree with you on the abbreviations, I do this every day in my personal life and my job. While taking notes for class I will write abbreviations instead of the full word, it saves time and I know what I am talking about. In my job I use abbreviations constantly; example would be c-iso, for contact isolation. Society has used abbreviations for a long time, but with technology and things growing rapidly it is more common in our everyday use. I sometimes see the older generation using a LOL or a BTW, more then what people think. I think that it’s awesome that an older person would use them.
ReplyDeleteI think that ii is a good idea that students use abbreviations I don't see the harm in it. The new "texting talk" isn't anything new, it's a simpler way to write just like short-hand. Which and noone said anything about it and it didn't effect anyone. And I think that students realize when to use BTW's and LOL's and when not to. It's actually better bc they can take notes quicker and that means more time to learn.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. I think why this is made out to be such a big deal is because it is exploited by the media that is ran by a scared generation of people who don't understand all of the new technologies and changes. And i agree that abbreviating is a much better and clearer way to take notes and be quick while staying ahead in class.
