"We know that 75 percent of American Adolescents are online (US Census, 2002) and 85 percent of all Internet users expect to find key news information online (Horrigan and Rainie 2002). Yet the adolescent of the 90s are more isolated and more unsupervised than any other generations". The tools of visual, media and information literacy must be taught in schools because they will (or won't) be used at home.

I selected this quote for a few different reasons. 1. The percentage of kids on the Internet is mind blowing. When I was growing up, my mother didn't know enough about the Internet to feel the need to monitor me while I was using it. Not saying that I did or found or searched for anything too terrible but the need to be monitored did exist. Parents knowing these facts about the Internet now leads to healthier internet usage for our younger society. 2. I chose this because I know that parents of the present day use the internet in their every day lives for work or just whatever they want. I also know for a fact that our students are not being taught how to use the internet for other reasons than for research. So learning all the possibilities in school is crucial.

Yes, it is very important to make sure that our students are taught the correct way to incorporate information literacy in their lives. The students of today expect information to be immediate. With this bombardment of information students need to be taught how to handle all of the information such as which sites are “safe” sites and which sites are questionable. Providing students with tips on how to use the internet in a responsible manner is critical to information literacy. Thanks for your informative post!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your analysis completely. Very well done!
ReplyDeleteIt is so important to teach children how to be safe on the internet. Because "bad" information is too easy for children to get a hold of. I do believe however, parents are becoming more aware of how easy it can be. Both teachers and parents still need to do their job in teaching children "safe" sites. Though ya did a great job!
ReplyDeleteGrowing up, I never had any supervision when using the internet. I still don't think my parents have any idea of what is out on the web. Today, it's important for kids to know how to stay safe on the web and teachers need to know the importance of internet supervision.
ReplyDeletei agree, learning all the possible uses of the internet is something that needs to be taught more.
